Let's Talk About It - Divergent Cultures: the Middle East in Literature
This book discussion series brings scholars and community members together to explore how selected books illuminate a particular theme. The program includes reading and discussing five books over the course of nine weeks. In this series, readers will explore ancient and modern conflicts to build understanding about the varied and richly textured peoples, conflicts, histories, and geographies of the Middle East. The series is made possible by the North Carolina Humanities Council. Refreshments and additional support are provided by the Friends of the Union County Public Libraries. Growing a Great Vegetable Garden - Monroe Library

Everything tastes better when it’s home grown! Jeff Rieves, Horticulture Specialist with the Union County Agricultural Center, will offer tips on how to grow a successful vegetable garden. Jeff will discuss planning a garden, preparing the soil, seed selection and planting, weed and pest control, and anything else that will lead to a bountiful crop. If you plan to plant a garden this year, don’t miss this presentation! FREE starter packets of vegetable seeds will be given to the first 25 people to arrive at this program.

Ancestry On-line for Beginners: Census Research

This two-hour class passes fast learning how to use Ancestry.com to search the U.S. Census! First we'll look for the same person together. Then you'll get help looking for your ancestors. Joy Lost...and Found
Monroe resident Joy Brown will talk about her autobiographical novel, Joy Lost…and Found. The early death of both parents, a shattered childhood, a broken heart, an orphanage upbringing, and the living death of alcoholism shape the backdrop for this inspiring story of triumph over tragedy. This book is a testament to the divine spark within every human being. Please join us to hear Joy’s book talk at the Monroe Library, Griffin Room. The James Miller Camp of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans presents Greg Mast, Author of State Troops and Volunteers: A Photographic Record of North Carolina's Civil War Soldiers
Author Greg Mast, who compiled and wrote State Troops and Volunteers: A Photographic Record of North Carolina's Civil War Soldiers, is being hosted by the James Miller Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans at the Monroe Library, Griffin Room. Mast will feature "Tarheels in Color", ambrotypes that have been colorized, with a special emphasis on Union County's boys in gray. There will be mystery images of unidentified soldiers - maybe you can help? And if you have any photos of your Confederate ancestors, Mast would love to scan them for a future volume, so plan to bring those. Need more information about the program? Ladies' Spring Tea featuring author Patti Callahan Henry

The Friends of the Union County Public Libraries will host the 5th Annual Ladies' Spring Tea with guest speaker Patti Callahan Henry. Patti is the New York Times Bestselling author of six novels with Penguin/NAL (Losing the Moon, Where the River Runs, When Light Breaks, Between the Tides, The Art of Keeping Secrets, and Driftwood Summer. Patti is hailed as a fresh new voice in southern fiction. The Tea will be held at Rolling Hills Country Club, located at 2722 W. Roosevelt Blvd, Monroe, NC 28110.
